VZ is the best telco to buy now. Earnings out tomorrow. If they are anything like SBC's and the big wireless IPO is announced this cheap 12 PE business is history. Coubnt on VZ to announce huge growth in wireless and DSL customers. The only sticking point was the strike which may have affected earnings on a one-time basis. But be aware that since the successful GTE-BEL merger and addition of VOD as a partner than the stock is still down about 35%. Looking forward if you're tired of speculative plays, VZ is a great safe stock to own now and should get a nice pop in coming days. when the IPO comes out the stock will pop again. Also I expect it will be added to the DOW sometimes soon, perhaps replacing T.

"I am most puzzled by cingular's approach. The CEO was on CNBC yesterday. He said their approach is about "expressing yourself"? What exactly is that in wireless telecom terms?"

Not sure if you've seen them, but Cingular ran a number of commercials during the Super Bowl, some of the most lame I've seen in a long time... As a for instance, one is of a middle aged white guy, in a white t-shirt and black pants up against a white background who dances around while some uplifting music from "Peter and the Wolf" plays in the background. He flails around for a while, does a bit of breakdancing, then some announcer comes on and says something about Cingular, which was so nondescript I can't for the life of me remember what it was. All I remember is thinking, "Dang, what a stupid commercial for a cellular company...".

So at least they're consistent in their message...

Ramsey - Your response leads me to ask how many announced GPRS (w/ or w/o EDGE) handset manufacturers are there? If any are close to success, wouldn't they be announcing it similar to QCOM and 1X?

RE: Spring Evolium - Alacatel and Fujitsu project which claims to have Edge and GPRS ready 2nd calendar qtr.

Deadline is just around the corner, so we do not have long to wait.

RE: MOT/CSCO - China Mobile awarded GPRS contract in Dec 2000 for GPRS in 4 cities .... I would assume MOT would be making these phones, or are they just doing infrastructure? This would be a good question for MOT IR.

Lucent was working on EDGE, but do not know anything about GPRS. With all their troubles, who knows what is happening there.

Is Siemens involved in GPRS?

Any of the Asian companies besides Fujitsu?

Lot's of research possibilities here for some diligent investigators <ggg>.
