Short-sighted or not, if subsidies for using alternative energy sources were available and made economic sense to them, they would use them---which means increased demand for products from CPST and the rest.

And it's hard to see how that would be shortsighted---either for me and you (who would make money on the stock), for developers (who would be able to produce developments cheaper), for the energy problem in general (since demand would be reduced and supply increased), or for residential homebuyers (who would no longer be at the mercy of the energy markets and the manipulating forces there, nor susceptible to power outages).
