About seventy-five firms are expected to report earnings today. Before the opening bell, look for releases by Alcatel (ALA), Allergan (AGN), AOL-Time Warner (AOL), Bethlehem Steel (BS), Clorox Company (CLX) and Williams Companies (WMB). After the close, expect word from Airborne (ABF), Celestica (CLS), Coca-Cola (KO), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM) and Ticketmaster (TMCS).

Among those coming in ahead of the estimates were AFCI, PSFT and TIVO. Missing Street estimates and trading to the downside were ABGX and CHIR. Adobe Systems (ADBE) and Applied Materials (AMAT) warned. ADBE shares lost 8 1/4 to $44 1/2. AMAT shares dropped 1 5/16 to $51 1/8. Amazon.com (AMZN) beat the average Wall Street earnings estimate by a penny, but the e-tailer cuts its sales projection for the year and its shares dropped 13/16 to $18 1/8.
