New Focus Inc. (NUFO) had pro forma earnings of $2.6 million, or 4 cents a share, in the latest quarter, compared with a pro forma loss of $4.3 million, or 11 cents a share, last year.

The company defines pro forma as excluding non-cash charges for amortization of deferred stock compensation.

New Focus said it expects 2001 revenue of $240 million, based on higher revenue expectations for its units and incremental revenue from its new unit, JCA Technology Inc.

This is significantly higher than the company's previous 2001 revenue guidance of $150 million, given in October 2000.

Six analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial currently expect New Focus to post $152.9 million revenue in 2001; nine analysts expect 2001 earnings of 12 cents a share from New Focus.

As reported, New Focus acquired JCA Technology, a fiber-optics products maker, in January, for a revised price of about $340 million - including $75 million cash and 10 million New Focus shares.

New Focus plans to incorporate JCA's figures into its financial results beginning in the first quarter of 2001.

Shares of New Focus were recently quoted on the Island ECN at $55.25, up from Tuesday's close of $49.38.

New Focus had a pro forma loss, excluding noncash charges, of $12.2 million, or 22 cents a share, in the 2000 -year, compared with a pro forma loss of $9.1 million, or 30 cents a share, last year.

The company makes fiber-optic products for next-generation optical networks.
