Food production is a national defense issue. What if we cannot produce food in a way that keeps food producers in business? Also, food shortages tend to really piss people off. People will riot when they can't get food. Politicians are mindful of this- and so am I.

We can easily produce food for a profit in the US without subisides. Some business might go under, but a huge amount and variety of food would still be produced. More then enough to feed the US and more then enough to export. We might lose some export markets to subidized competition from other countries but 1 - I'm against their subsidies too, and 2 - If other countries want to give thier food away below cost they are not helping themselves but are rather giving handouts to their customers.

Agricultural Subsidies are alot more about lining the pockets of agri-business then they are about being able to produce enough food in the US.
