AMAT, the semiconductor-equipment maker, warned Q1 profit and sales will be lower than already-reduced forecasts because of delayed and canceled orders. Profit for the period ended Sunday didn't reach the 74-cent average estimate of analysts. AMAT closed at $52.44.

AMAT upgraded from "buy" to "strong buy" at CIBC.

AOL reported Q4 profit of 15 cents a share, compared with EPS of 9 cents in the year-earlier period. The revenue for the period rose 31 percent over last year to $2.1 billion, matching analysts' estimates. America Online Internet service added 2.1 million subscribers during the latest three months, and its membership outside of the U.S. has passed the 5 million- member mark.
