I think the conflict of interests play less of a role in bad research than the analysts' own bad judgement From what I've seen you rarely go wrong betting on the fact that people know who is buttering their bread. And for the analysts, that ain't the retail clientele...As for Merrill Lynch specifically, just pop on over to the SNDK thread and read about the recent pre-earnings downgrade...the downgrade that was immediately followed by ML loading the boat with said same stock. I am under no illusion that analysts are doing all this fabulous "research" and making these grand pronouncements for my benefit. In fact, I'd be a fool to assume so.
