WEBM ---> webMethods posts third quarter operating profit vs loss

FAIRFAX, Va., Jan 31 (Reuters) - Systems integration software maker, webMethods Inc. (NasdaqNM:WEBM - news) on Wednesday reported fiscal third-quarter operating earnings that blew past Wall Street's expectations, fueled by increased penetration of both large companies and online business-to-business exchanges.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31, the company said it earned $2.7 million, or 5 cents a share, compared with a loss of $5.9 million, or 13 cents a share in the year-ago quarter. Results exclude acquisition and non-cash charges related to amortization of deferred stock compensation, goodwill and acquired intangibles.

Analysts had on average expected the company to earn a penny a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Revenues grew 237 percent to $59.4 million, up from $17.76 million in the fiscal-third quarter 1999.
