It was before there was "afterhours", on an NYSE stock, so you couldn't trade the stock after 4:00, but you could make your exercise decision until 4:30. Technically, the OCC prospectus says/said that options (most) expire on the Saturday following the 3rd Friday of the month, but each brokerage firm has its own cutoff time for accepting verbal instructions to override the automatic exercises and expirations.
