Intel takes aim at Transmeta January 30, 2001 03:00 AM ET

Today, Intel introduced a Pentium III and a new Celeron processor aimed at the subnotebook market. Both chips will run at 500 megahertz, but the Pentium III will power down to 300 MHz when users want to conserve battery life. The Pentium III can run using 0.975 volts, less than half of Intel's previous generation of subnotebook chips.

"Let there be no doubt we will absolutely provide the performance leadership and the low-power leadership," Spindler said in a briefing with journalists Monday.
