Every time I try to imagine this, I laugh: everyone in the country, sometime last fall, got so sad that Clinton wasn't going to be president any more, that they didn't care whether it was Gore or Bush who was elected, they let the economy go to hell. But somehow they really knew Bush would be elected, even though the race was a statistical dead heat. So it's really Bush's fault that last quarter the economy slowed to a standstill, even though no one was sure who would be president until December. How did he do it?

I guess it's sort of like the invisible hand.
