Oh Ashcroft was to be expected. He's the scapegoat for the Bush administration, since GW is too powerful to take on directly.

There are several things Bush has done that are significant for consolidating his power and fostering good relations with the White House media. The first is that he's directly meeting with congressmembers in larger numbers than any other previous president this early in his administration. This kind of hands-on treatment is important for garnering bi-partisan support and rapport.

The second is that he's holding his press events on time and on schedule. He's also "putting the lid" on the news cycle. Anything that is not put out to the press by 5:20 PM wait's until the next morning. This permits reporters to actually have a life and not have to respond to late night news releases from the WH, as Clinton was apt to do.
There likely will be no weekend news "events" either, unless very urgent. Many reporters were very p*ssed off at the Clintons for the way they handled the news cycle. Aside from the long hours, they often were left waiting an hour or more for Clinton press conferences due to his notorious tardiness. This had a direct bearing on their their coverage of Clinton, according to reports.

Bush, on the other hand, is impeccably on time, on schedule, and considerate of those who also operate on a schedule, which includes congressmen.

Regards,

Ron
