Gartner Dataquest Says Home PC Sales Drive Latin America PC Shipment Growth of 50
Percent in 2000

Story Filed: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 2:00 PM EST

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan 31, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Personal computer shipments in Latin America surpassed 6.9 million units in
2000, an increase of 50 percent over 1999 shipments, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB).

The consumer segment had PC shipments total nearly 2.7 million units in 2000, up 77 percent from the year before. The professional
segment had slower growth with shipments reaching 3.7 million units, a 35 percent increase over 1999.

"Some of the strong growth in the consumer market in 2000 can be attributed to the recovery of the industry after the January 1999
devaluation in Brazil, which had a domino effect in Argentina. The PC consumer segment increased its demand, particularly in
Brazil, because vendors provided creative offers which added to the effect of better economic conditions," said Luis Anavitarte, vice
president and chief analyst for Gartner Dataquest's Latin American research. "In addition, the professional segment was partially
impacted because some companies chose to delay purchasing new PCs until their applications were tested in the context of
Windows 2000."

While PC shipments grew 50 percent in 2000, top-tier vendors experienced a slight decline in market share because of the
continued success of "white box" vendors in the region (see Table 1).

In 2000, regional notebook sales grew 37 percent over 1999. Compaq, Acer and HP experienced market share increases in the
notebook segment.

The PC industry benefited from a strong market in Brazil and Mexico, as well as healthier sales in Chile and Argentina. PC
shipments in Brazil grew 108 percent in 2000. Mexico experienced shipment growth of 25 percent, while Chile and Argentina had 37
and 36 percent growth, respectively.

In the fourth quarter of 2000, the Latin America PC market grew 53 percent over the fourth quarter of 1999, but Gartner Dataquest
analysts said there could be challenges for the industry in 2001.

"The fourth quarter PC results, particularly in Mexico, may start to suggest a possible slowdown for the industry in 2001. This is
because of the changes in the U.S. economy, which will impact its Latin America trading partners," Mr. Anavitarte said.
