Australia Misses Out On Asia Pacific Server Boom

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 2001 FEB 1 (NB) -- By David Frith, Computer Daily News.
Australia bucked the upward trend in the Asia Pacific computer server market by
showing flat sales during the final quarter of 2000, according to preliminary figures
from the Gartner Group's Dataquest unit.

Server unit shipments within the Asia Pacific region are expected to show in excess
of 30 percent year-on-year unit growth, Dataquest says. But quarter-on-quarter
(Q4-2000 v Q3-2000) growth was much lower at 6.55 percent.

The growth trend is expected to continue as emerging markets such as India begin
to take a foothold in this region, Dataquest says. Singapore and Hong Kong also
enjoyed good growth.

But it's a different story in Australia, which is expected to show "fairly flat" growth
year on year. "Factors contributing to this result include the Olympic games and
exchange rate issues biting hard during quarter four 2000," said Dataquest analyst
Matthew Boon.

Dataquest said Compaq [NYSE:CPQ], Hewlett-Packard [NYSE:HWP] and IBM
[NYSE:IBM] retained their top three positions in the Asia Pacific server market. Dell
[NASDAQ:DELL] was well behind in fourth spot, but narrowing the gap with an 18
percent rise in shipments: China's Legend company filled fifth place.
