Bullies Must Stop Hating Themselves

The Governor's Prevention Partnership Bullying Task Force
is a good thing [editorial, Jan. 23, "Stop School Bullies"].
The victims of bullying (generally the small, young, weak,
naive) do need responsiveness, attention and support. The
other side of the equation, the preventive side, is to work with
the bullies themselves and to help them understand that
what prompts their behavior is a feeling of their own
powerlessness.

A recent visitor to our school, playing the part of Malcolm X
in a diversity assembly, said, "If you really love yourself,
there is no room for hate." What both bullies and victims
often fail to recognize is that bullies themselves feel weak
and vulnerable, and their cruel behavior is an attempt to
rectify that by picking on someone ostensibly weaker and
more vulnerable.

When someone feels good about himself, he is likely to feel
good about those around him. People, young and not so
young, who are negative, unkind, cruel and hateful are
usually projecting all that they sense, consciously or
unconsciously, about themselves. Both the bullies and the
victims need help in understanding and accepting their and
others' humanity so that "there is no room for hate."
