I'm not an accountant either, so I really don't know. I would think Globalstar's recent fiasco of not paying their debt and suppliers would make Qualcomm think that the value of the good will portion of Qualcomm's investment isn't worth what it was at the time of the investment. @Home would probably think the same of their acquisition of Excite these days. And Infospace's decision to discontinue certain lines of their business would make them rethink the value of the goodwill of those businesses that were acquired.

Beyond that, I really don't know. Hopefully someone else has already helped out or will contribute a more meaningful answer to your question.
