Scott,

Is there any chance you'll eventually make the font size a personalization option?

I ask because I wonder if you'll be able to find a font and size that works for everyone, even breaking things down by browser and operating system.

People who browse a lot of pages that use reduced-size fonts (e.g., <font size="-1"> or the CSS equivalent) for the bulk of their text (contrary to how HTML is meant to be used, of course) might set their browsers to use larger fonts. If you use a normal-sized font, it will show up larger than normal or wanted.

People who browse a lot of better-written pages (using HTML's default font size for the bulk of the text) might set their browsers to use smaller fonts. If you use a reduced font size (to satisfy the first case), it's likely to show up unreadably or at least uncomfortably small for this group.

(Note that this conflict applies even for people using the same browser on the same operating system.)

If it turns out that you can't find an in-between size that satisfies both groups, can SI consider supporting adjusting the font size (that is, have something in the user profile or a cookie that your server side uses to adjust <font size=xx> tags or CSS styling)?

(Of course, if Microsoft hadn't screwed around and used "<font size=-2>" as a default, and if authors had adjusted their own browsers instead of the HTML, the Web wouldn't be in this mess.)

Daniel

Scott, I have a question.

Why is it if I choose the toolbar icons for my toolbar (which I prefer) I cannot get the number of messages in my Inbox?

If you can do it one place, why not the other?

Thanks Scott--I'm using IE 5.0; will upgrade next week when the new machine comes. (silver lining: getting a ton of "real" reading done as I spend less and less time on SI)

Scott, I think this is a recent development although I'm not sure. (I'm starting to feel the way the Ingrid Bergman character must have felt in Gaslight).

For at least the past day, many areas of SI are only filling the screen about 60% of the way across when I am in Classic. An exception is the Home Page, which goes about 80% across. When using the new format everything is fine.

This may be part of the explanation of the pic problem, since when there were problems it sometimes appeared the picture was having trouble figuring out how big it should be. Needless to say, text and pictures (especially) are smaller than they could be, although everything seems to fit properly into the space that SI thinks is available.

I am using Windows 98 with IE 5.50. I have a 17" monitor and the display resolution is 1024x768. Is this the result of some sort of "best fit" algorithm that I'll have to live with, or can we go back to using the whole screen?
