Isn't that what it does when it approves a charity to receive money eligible for a tax credit? I say cut taxes, period, and trust people will do the "right" thing with it.

If the Fed wants to help, a $500 tax credit to be applied to the tax-exempt charity of my choice would encourage giving.

then the Federal Government will be in the business of licensing the faith-based charities it approves of (who makes the official list, I wonder?). And regulating them.
