>> Flextronics Likely to Build UMTS Equipment in Poland

31st January 2001

Flextronics International will likely base some its production of equipment for next-generation UMTS mobile telephone networks at its factories near the Polish port of Gdansk, a company executive said on Wednesday.

"That is what we are trying to do there, the competencies we are trying to build up there, so we can make equipment for all telecom companies, hopefully for existing 2G (second generation) but also for 3G," Flextronics Western Europe President Ronny Nilsom told AFP.

The subcontractor, which is to handle all mobile handset production from Sweden's Ericsson, does not plan to base any handset production at its Polish factories, which are to focus on base stations and other network equipment.

Flextronics has already opened one factory employing 650 people in the Tczew special economic zone, and is due to open a second facility this summer, with investments to total 100 million dollars (107.5 million euros). <<
