This clearly sounds more like a BS, and is in fact a shameless Rambus propaganda. Samsung says: "..it has developed a more affordable Rambus ... chip" Note: a chip, not the RIMM, the consumable product. The difference is that Rambus chips are already not too expensive as compared to SDRAM _chips_, since the major silicon area for DRAM cells is basically the same, only interface is different. The reason for higher price of RIMMs is in necessity to maintain incredibly high tolerances in every step of RIMM production, to keep micron-thin accuracy in printed traces, quality of filling compounds, accurate pressing of multilayer board, precise soldering to stay within specified impedance, etc. Also, the cost of 800MHz-range testers is much higher than those for SDRAM/DDR. Although the cost of testers may be diluted as production increases (big if), the cost of maintaining higher tolerances will never go away. Samsung does not say a word about any of these matters, and the article is legally correct. Also, this is not a news. This is at least 5-th post from "surckla" on the "Samsung affordable memory". I noticed the pattern in his posting: 1. Post a flashy headline, "afforadble Rambus", but with no link to the original source of information. 2. Next day, post the same flashy title, now with a bare link the the source. 3. Next day, the same title, but finally with full article appended. 4. Next days - do the same on other weakly relevant groups. Sounds like a "solid" strategy to maintain the hype about his company. Way to go, Richard <g>
