S Africa's Anglo's bid for De Beers surprises market
Cape Town--Feb. 1--Thursday's announcement of the Anglo American-led
consortium's U.S. $40 per share bid for diamond giant De Beers has taken most
industry analysts by surprise, although there had been rumors of the deal
earlier in the week that had been discounted. The buy-out of De Beers by Anglo
American will resolve the two companies' cross-shareholding, which currently
sees De Beers with a 35.4% stake in Anglo American, and Anglo with 32.3% of De
Beers.
