Scott Herhold: Analyst has good news, bad news for chip stocks

Posted at 1:46 a.m. PDT Monday, April 9, 2001

Goldman Sachs analyst Terry Ragsdale has just spent six weeks on a 99-page study of semiconductor stocks. It's a readable and lucid piece of work. But what he likes to point to first is a quote he's included from Dave Rickey, the CEO of Applied Micro Circuits (AMCC), a one-time darling of Wall Street that now has fallen into disfavor.

At an Optical Fiber Conference in late March, Rickey confined his formal speech, scheduled for five minutes, to just six words: "We are sucking wind. Any questions?"
