I'm running MSN Explorer with Windows ME as my OS and seriously cannot recall my last crash.

I also have IE 5.5 SP1 installed as I use the IE Favorites saved in a toolbar folder on occasion.

The difference in the 2 browsers to me is that MSN is better on resources and has a classier GUI.

IE 5.5 is more feature rich and therefore easier to use but a slight bit slower and uses a few points more resources than MSN.It is also very solid as is MSN.

mr mark, I use IE5.5 with Win98SE and it has been solid, even though I faintly remember it crashed once. That may have been due to something else - I never pursued it.

Has anyone played with their "DefaultRcvWindow" setting?

I read about this tweak, which is specifically for cable/dsl modems, in a
back issue of PC Magazine in my Mom's Dr.'s office and while
searching for more info I found the same tweak but for dialups w/ Win 95:

The only difference was in the value for DefaultRcvWindow, PC mag.
recommended 32767, the value recommended in the Win95 tweak in the link
is 2144.

I went ahead and followed the steps in the link:

Changing the RWIN. Click To See Screenshot: support.pinc.com
(From regedit)
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\.
Select New from the Edit menu, then String Value, and type (I copied) DefaultRcvWindow -
(Note this is case sensitive!) for the name of the new value.
Double-click on the new value, and type in the desired number 2144*

*but substituted 32767 for 2144

After rebooting web pages definitely loaded faster! If you're also going to try this tweak
make sure to backup your registry first just in case. Easy way to backup registry:

Start>Run >type "scanregw" >enter

Let me know what you think!

Haven't had any browser crashes with Netscape since upgraded to the 4.7x series. That was quite awhile ago.

best,

Rick

I've been using I.E. 5.5 Advanced Security Privacy Beta for a few months now and luckily haven't had any problems so far with it. Now if only I could say that about WinME. :(

Btw, no Netscape here for 1year+.

I'm still running 98SE and IE 5.0. I'm not going to say how many crashes I have had lately for fear of jinxing myself. I have tried 5.5 several different times and have returned to 5.0 after being disappointed with 5.5's performance on my machine. I had periods of slowdowns and a few crashes (nothing serious) and just feel that 5.0 is more responsive and stable for me. I keep Netscape 4.76 in reserve but very rarely use it.

I use IE without problems. On my old system I used Netscape without problems.

In IE, when the cursor passes over a link, it changes to a hand with the index finger extended. Netscape's hand cursor had the middle finger extended. I find the IE version more polite.

Cheers, PW.
