It's hard to charge someone for the services you suggest AND keep advertising revenue.

How would you like it if every time you picked up your phone to make a call you had to wait for someone to tell you about the new Ford? I don't think the two revenue sources are compatible. The reason that Yahoo is trying to get away from the advertising model, IMO, is because the advertisers are discovering how ineffective it is.

And why would I want to store my CDs and DVDs on Yahoo storage? Seems like pie in the sky to me.

Keith:

I was just sorting through my business accounts and was looking at all my paper documents and thinking - why doesn't yahoo allow me to store that instead of my photos. Just after that I looked at SI and saw your post.

>>After they start saving their CD's and DVD's, they will start storing thier digital picture albulms. The digitalizaiton of multimedia will have profound effects for companies that provide Internet storage. In five years, people are going to be amazed at how much entertainment and multimedia they have accumulated.

Yahoo will no longer be a portal to the Internet but a portal to personal digital archiving. >

Do you feel the deal YHOO signed with NOVL will aid them in achieving this "future" you predict? NOVL does the the content personalization/relationship software (eDirectory) and the online storage system (JustOn - which was the 2nd most used storage system for Napster) that fit nicely into the scenario you predict.

So it may be easier than you think to get to your "reality" with personalized content and access to an online storage "vault". Now with that login and personalization, I can access the storage data with any device not just a PC using a browser. So my PDA can interact with the storage space as well as my MP3 player, cell phone and other devices too. Adding a "quicksync" feature for any and all devices (a la FusionOne) would handle the problem of having disparate data entered into different devices and stored in a central location. From there, its a short step to creating shareable folders and sharable information (such as addressbooks and buddy lists and more).

The pieces are all starting to come to life - the thing is who is going to bundle them all together into an easy-to-use interface that allows me to leverage the many devices I use?
