Again, I can't find the specific reference now, so I'll withdraw the comment until I can scare it up...

I would not say that your 18 stage reference is out of the question, only that the info has not been released by AMD, and to me, it seems unlikely. Some of the rumors / leaks suggest that the design of K8 borrows heavily from K7, and such a jump in the number of stages seems like a fairly significant departure from K7.
