Brazil auction gets green light as judge lifts injunction By Reuters staff 31 January 2001 A Brazilian judge on Tuesday lifted an injunction that was blocking an auction of nine cellular telephone licenses, giving the government the green light to go ahead with the auction next week. The government had been set to sell the licenses in a three-leg auction starting Tuesday, but a legal injunction granted last week temporarily postponed the proceedings. Jose Kallas, a Sao Paulo federal judge, ruled against the injunction. The first of the three auctions will take place next Tuesday, Brazil's telecommunications regulator Anatel said. Anatel will accept companies' bids on Thursday. The government expects to earn about $3 billion from the sale of the licenses according to set base prices. The licenses have attracted bids from Telecom Italia and local carriers including Telemar . Company representatives went to Anatel last week to hand in their bids but they were sent away following the injunction. Anatel said the second two auctions will continue as planned, on February 20 and March 13. Companies that confirmed they are bidding for the licenses are Telecom Italia, Telemar, Brasil Telecom and Tele Centro Oeste Celular. Some analysts called the auction process a failure after Anatel failed to attract interest from some of the world's leading telephone operators that as yet have no operations in Brazil. It's like having a China build-out that will happen. LOL! Given the fear and loathing beginning to set in in UMTS land I feel the situation there is screaming for Q to come out with a GSM/1X chip. A GSM/1X chip does away with the roaming issue, kills GPRS/EDGE, allows carriers to start building out immediately, handsets are available that work, allows them to get to 3G via GSM/1XEV, and would save the carriers billions of dollars. During the CC management said they are working on a GSM CORE in house and are also looking to aquire GSM IP. To me this is why they traded the crown jewels with TI, to me a GSM/1X chip would be far more important than WCDMA and could be why IJ said that 1X will out sell WCDMA for several years. It would also mark the beginning of a GSM/CDMA era instead of the GSM VS CDMA era we are in now.
