EGHAM, United Kingdom, Feb 1, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- With a fourth quarter slowdown in entry-level consumer personal computers, European PC shipments totaled 35.3 million units in 2000, an increase of 6 percent over 1999, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB).
In the fourth quarter of 2000, PC shipments reached 11 million units, up 2 percent from the fourth quarter of 1999. The consumer PC segment declined 4.7 percent during the fourth quarter of 2000.
"You may get more PC for your money than you did a year ago, but for many entry-level buyers, it is still not enough," said Brian Gammage, analyst with Gartner Dataquest's Computing Platform group. "The dollar valuation of the euro has held back the specifications of PCs at lower price points, and vendors have not been able to make their offer sufficiently attractive to consumers. This is not a decline across the whole consumer market, as shipments for higher priced consumer PCs have grown."
HP recorded the highest growth rate among the top-tier vendors, at nearly four times the industry average. IBM and Fujitsu Siemens recorded negative growth rates, while Dell and Compaq showed modest growth over 1999 (see Table 1). As a result, HP passed IBM to become Europe's No. 4 vendor in the region.

In 2000, PC shipments in the professional segment grew 3.7 percent over 1999, while shipments to the home market grew 12.2 percent. The professional segment accounted for 72 percent of the PC market in Europe during 2000, with shipments of 25.3 million units. Shipments to the home market increased by 10 million units over 1999.
Germany was the No. 1 country in the region with shipments of 7.1 million units, an increase of 4.3 percent over 1999. Shipments to the United Kingdom reached 6.1 million units, up 7.9 percent over the previous year, while PC shipments in France totaled 4.3 million units, a decrease of 1.1 percent. Russia showed the strongest growth in the region, with shipments of 1.4 million units, up 28.9 percent from 1999.
"The last four quarters we saw a lockdown in the professional segment, resulting in slow growth throughout the year," Mr. Gammage said. "We should see an increase in the uptake of Windows 2000 and a pickup of PC replacements in 2001, which will result in stronger growth."
