Lack of Heroes at Economic Talks Leaves Impression of World Adrift
Trudy Rubin
Feb. 1, 2001

DAVOS, Switzerland -- Where have all the leaders gone?
Not to the World Economic Forum, the annual gathering of the world's economic and political elite that showcases the kind of leaders who can solve the world's problems.

Each year's forum has had its global heroes, from Russia's new democrats to Europe's Euro-creators; from the Bill Clinton-Robert Rubin duo that spurred the United States' economic triumph, to the Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates.

But this year's meeting in the Swiss ski resort of Davos was singularly lacking in heroes. Instead, it left the unsettling impression of a world adrift.
