US oil chiefs in Iran talks
Financial Times, Jan. 31

Chief executives of the three largest US oil companies have met Iran's foreign minister, in the energy companies' most significant move yet to bridge the political divide between the two countries.

Iran's Kamal Kharrazi met Exxon Mobil's Lee Raymond, Chevron's David O'Reilly and Archie Dunham of Conoco privately in New York earlier this month to discuss prospects for easing US sanctions banning investment in the energy-rich Middle East nation.

Chevron confirmed the talks, although Exxon Mobil declined comment on the specific meeting.

The high-level talks come as US oil companies are gradually unfurling a campaign for Washington to ease the sanctions that have kept them out of the race for Iranian oil projects since Bill Clinton enacted a full trade embargo in 1995.

They hope former Texas oilman George W. Bush's arrival in the White House - together with Vice-President Dick Cheney, who attacked sanctions when head of oil services giant Halliburton - will mean restrictions are at least eased this year.
