I have seen similar arguments elsewhere. Jeremy Siegel too feels that the stock-market rise in 1982-1997 merely compensated for the stagnation in 1966-1981.

Regarding your observation, I wonder what the PE ratios were in early 1971. The current PE ratios are said to be the highest in history, meaning that there has been some PE expansion over the 30-year period from 1971 to 2000.
