NEXT week we have the Israeli election, which will put a hawk (Ariel Sharon) in charge. he is despised, feared and respected at the same time in the Arab world.

Saddam has in the meantime resurrected his military capabilities...his army is once again by far the strongest in the region. according to a recent deserter, he has enough chemical and bacteriological weapons to eradicate life on the entire planet, however, he lacks in delivery systems (missiles). reportedly he even has two nuclear devices, however these reports are as of yet unconfirmed (or if they are,the information was not deemed fit for public consumption).

i mention this because his rhetoric has become a lot more belligerent in recent weeks, and the West seems to shrug him off as a loonie that can't do anything anyway. however, Patriot missile systems have recently been relocated from European bases to Israel, and a US military unit is scheduled to do a little bit of target practice in Israel over the next two weeks. remember, European and Europe based US forces have recently been put on a high alert status...so apparently SOMEONE is taking the threats seriously.

it may well be that NOTHING comes of this...but it has the potential to deteriorate into an unexpected left-of-field event that could upset various markets, especially energy.

what needs to be watched as well is Japan...soon mark-to-market rules will be in effect, and that will result in a fresh wave of bankruptcies, forced asset sales, and similar gloomesque doings. Japan may be on the cusp of the final wash-out, and that will not be a picnic...if/when it comes, look for Japanese institutions to repatriate funds to help alleviate their domestic liquidity problems.
