A lawyer I work with like to hunt - he has trips planned this year to South Africa, Alaska, Wyoming and central Canada - he has an Iridium phone, and is looking forward to resumption of service. I don't suppose many people need one, but if you want a phone where there is no land line and no cell towers, what else are you gonna do?

I have been in contact with Telecoms Sans Frontieres in France, suggesting that they ask Iridium to donate phones to take to the earthquake zone in India, but they haven't responded to my email. They advertise that they are partners with Inmarsat, maybe the arrangement is exclusive. Maybe we need a US version of Telecoms Sans Frontieres - I would be more than willing to help.
