The technology provides Alcatel the ability to develop products that can switch optical signals of any data rate and format, without the costly reversion to the electrical domain required in today's networks. This format independence allows Alcatel to construct many products required for the optical layer of tomorrow's telecom networks. "Flexibility and scalability are prerequisites for developing the next-generation network that Alcatel envisions. The early adoption of this optical switch technology will allow Alcatel to achieve a leading position in the emerging optical layer of the communications network," commented Christian Reinaudo, president of Alcatel Optics. The Agilent switch matrix design allows manufacture of large, scaleable, bi-directional and strictly non-blocking optical switch matrices. Further details about the technology behind the optical switch will be announced by Agilent at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) in Baltimore on March 7, 2000. "This agreement underscores Agilent's commitment to the communications industry and the development of optical technologies, which is important for meeting the increasing demand for capacity," said John O'Rourke, general manager of Agilent Optical Networking Division. About Alcatel Alcatel Optics, the number one worldwide supplier of optical telecom systems, regroups Alcatel's activities in terrestrial and submarine transmission networking, optoelectronic components, and related research and development. The products and services offered provide the most flexible solutions to the skyrocketing demand for transmission capacity due to the Internet explosion. Leading supplier of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, Alcatel's success in optical transmissions continues to set the pace in the global market place. Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data communications solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales of EURO 23 billion in 1999, Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries.
