Delay fears over US oil Bill

21:30 GMT

Tax issues could push aside Senate legislation to boost US oil and natural gas supplies promised for next week, according to a staffer with the Senate Energy Committee.

The Bush administration and Congressional Republicans have tried to create a different theme each week to address specific policy initiatives. Some lawmakers are worried the energy legislation, which looks at opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling, might interfere with next week's theme that will concentrate on tax issues, Reuters reported.

The energy committee's chairman, Senator Frank Murkowski of Alaska, is discussing the Bill with his colleagues at a Republican retreat this weekend and wants the legislation introduced next week. "As soon as Murkowski gets back on Monday, we'll have our marching orders," the staffer said.
