Bear or short mutual funds can also be used in tax deferred accounts. Look at RYURX, RYAKX, BEARX, USPIX.

I think special rules apply to short stock- but your short leap might be an idea. I think MB said something about futures being treated X% short term, y% long term, but I don't play in that arena. I hear we may have futures on individual stocks sometime in the near future, so this may be worth looking into.
