I am basing my behavior toward others on the only reference point that I know to be true. And that is my needs/wants/desires.

I know that I don't like to have my things stolen, so I assume that others also don't like to have things stolen from you. Therefore, I don't steal.

I agree completely.

It isn't really "so that I won't be killed"...

Sure it is. You meet your needs/wants/desires by giving the same consideration to others. There's a tacit agreement or contract there, although you refer to it as an assumption. You wouldn't make the assumption if you didn't have reason to believe that your expectation of reciprocity would be met. I'm not talking about quid pro quo here. I'm talking about modeling behaviors that contribute to the kind of society you want to live in with the expectation that that society will nurture your needs.

This is what I meant by "pro-choice" being a much bigger issue than just abortion to me. If a person says that they are "pro-choice", I expect that person to apply the same principles that they used to arrive at that conclusion to others. If they do not, then they are using situational ethics, which I have no respect for. That is, they are saying "I expect to be treated this way, but don't expect me to offer you the same treatment".

I agree with this, too.

I don't mean to be putting words in your mouth. It just seems to me that we're saying the same thing.
