I'm no engineer, but basically optical signals deteriorate over distance and have to be regenerated periodically. The new technology from CORV eliminates the need for regenerators and switching equipment, thus saving money. It turns out to be a good deal of money when you are talking about the distances for a network like GX. The cables on the bottom of the ocean are already old news believe it or not, but hopefully GX will adapt for the ones not yet completed, as a fringe benefit is increased bandwidth and speed. CORV is rumored to acquire one or two new customers in Q1, so maybe it is GX. Whether or not the old switches are easily and cheaply replaced, I don't know, but I'd be very surprised if GX doesn't incorporate the new technology into future "crossings".
