Even if he is not specifically told (i.e., "taught") that certain behaviors are desirable/undesirable, he is still going to learn by observing how others in the society behave.

I should have been clearer; when I said "taught" I was referring not only to what is consciously taught, but also to what we teach children by example.

I'm sure you have seen and heard (ad nauseam) of cultures where individuals are expected to treat members of their own clan or group with utmost kindness, but are permitted and even expected to treat members of other social groups with bitter cruelty. This suggests to me that virtue is in no way innate.
