The reason why I say that sometimes FA can provide insight is that sometimes the Street is intentionally pushing down the price of a company that has a very bright future, because some big boys want to accumulate a ton of shares very cheap. So, the price of such a company may drop dramatically and unexplicably, and remain depressed for some time. I think AMSC is an example, and there are others.

But you can't tell that this might be happening from the chart alone, because the Street may punish a bad company with second-rate products that had been hyped, but has obvious major problems.

If you spot a first-tier company that has been pushed down to a valuation below that of its peers and the market in general, then I think one should be increasingly suspicious that the market will one day be back with a vengeance---after they have bought the shares they wanted, not before. And of course, the analyst upgrades will never precede this, and may often come way, way later.

So FA may help differentiate these two situations, but the chart and technicals are largely not helpful.
