I like the word "function" much better than the word "purpose," because "purpose" requires a purposer.

And you can't use a blueprint for a house for building bridges. They have different functions.

There's a way "function" is a metaphor, too, but it's not significant to this discussion. We can surely use function unexceptionably to indicate an intrinsic program. Cells could be said to have function, in the sense blueprints do, but no brains or wills with which to generate intention.

You haven't in the least addressed my comments, btw. All you did was substitute function for purpose. Again:

Like osmosis and photosynthesis. Never interrupt them.

Also infection.

Decay.

Cataracts.

Leprosy.

Cancer.

Rabies.

All cellular.

In your sense, all "purposeful."

Bland, it makes no sense to attribute purpose to cells.
