I wasn't thinking of Sparta. What I had in mind were the tribal cultures here, in which a male wass supposed to be gentle, generous (sometimes insanely so), and generally a big pussycat in his own village, but was also expected to sneak over to sneak periodically off to the village over the hill to whack of somebody's head. I'm no cultural anthropologis, but I've read of similar tendencies in tribal/territorial cultures in Africa and S. America. We are, at root, an "us and them" species; it goes with our pack tendencies.
