Re: "I heard on the news last night that one of the Supremes will retire very soon."

There was a story that moved on one of the wires shortly after the election in which Sandra "Dee" O'Connor was quoted after Florida was wrongly called for Gore on election eve as saying something to the effect: "Oh, darn, I won't be able to retire in the next four years as I had planned because Gore will become president."

Sort of says it all, doesn't it?

I think it's fairly common knowledge that both O'Connor and Rehnquist will head back to their homes in Barry Goldwater country fairly soon. D-Dubya-I supposedly has his eye on some Latino version of Clarence Thomas to fill one of the seats, and Hatch to fill Big Bill's seat as Head Supreme.

Actually, it would make sense for both Sandy and Big Bill to retire within the next two years ... instead of risking a Dem Senate in '03.
