If we are close to a bottom in gold then I would expect that writing off mines as you suggest AU may be doing, and writing down assets such as PDG and ABX did last week, would be expected imo. Its a good time to cloud things a little here while your preparing for a ramp up.

If gravity starts acting on the dollar like I think it will, then a lot of boats will rise. Even DROOY which had its share of mysterious stuff looks bottomed.. I think at $350/oz or so the economics change nicely for all these companies because the stuff they have in the ground increases in value wether or not they mine it.

Actually shutting down all the mines temporarily would be the ultimate solution to the price of gold. I bet the price would go up a bit. -g-
