I have a Master's in Biomedical research from Vanderbilt University with a few years experience on top as I am attmpting to get a PhD as well so I am very familiar with Biotech. There are lots of companies out there with some interesting projects, but I can tell you that some will fail, and most will probably not be able to put out anything in the market for a few years. Biotech research is a slow process and in order to absolutely confirm a theory, a lot of experiments need to be done, with each being done many times. And when it comes to putting a new drug, etc on the market it is not a trivial process and often takes years itself. In my opinion, we have yet to see an explosion in biomedical research like we have with the internet. From what I see, we are still in the infancy stages of gathering information. Once scientists figure out how to use the information, then we'll see some pretty amazing things come along....my best guess? 5-10 years down the road. For the time being though, many biotechs are overvalued as they have been hyped up without the realization that the majority of income prospects are still years down the road. However, that's not to say that there are not a few gems out there now. One of my favorites is CRA...probably a bit overvalued as well, but they have already sequenced the human genome and are doing so much with it that they hold the potential to be one of the biggest databases for useful information which could be priceless. Research the biotechs carefully if you invest long term in them. It's early and many will come down in price, but there time will come.
