Engelhard Q4 profit up 49 pct, meets estimates
NEW YORK, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Specialty chemical maker Engelhard Corp. (NYSE:EC - news) on Monday said fourth-quarter earnings rose 49 percent, meeting Wall Street estimates, on the strength of its materials services unit.

The Iselin, N.J.-based company, whose products range from automotive catalytic converters to paper pigments and additives, said its earnings excluding special charges rose to $74.2 million, or 58 cents per share, compared with $49.7 million, or 39 cents per share, in the year-earlier quarter.

Wall Street analysts expected Engelhard to earn 58 per share according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Including charges, the company posted a net loss $918,000, or 1 cent per share.

The company also said it expects to earn 35 to 38 cents per share in the first quarter, compared with the consensus analysts' estimate of 38 cents per share. For 2001, the company expects to earn $1.70 to $1.80 per share, compared with the Wall Street estimate of $1.77 per share.

Shares in the company rose 21 cents to close Friday at $22.86 on the New York Stock Exchange, compared to a 52-week trading high of $22.99 and low of $12.5625
