These innocents are being tortured by their families, or foster homes, or foster families, or other adults or other children. These innocents are children being sexually or physically abused or neglected. Sometimes they are even killed.

Such actions are horrible. They are also illegal. Caring about unborn children does not mean you can not care about all ready born children as well.

But even worse is the neglect of the beautiful children in our inner cities- born to deprived parents, into a world that offers them very little hope, and almost no beauty.

Poverty is worse then being sexually abused and/or beaten and/or killed??

I cannot know whether you have bought into the patriarchal male power structure.

What patriarchal power structure?

Tim

and despair. If I am going to worry about something- it is going to be that. I find it very hard, considering the other
problems in the world (many of them due to overpopulation) to understand the concern with abortion.

Thank you for saying this, X. It's what tips me over to the pro-choice side, as a religious woman. Not only do I not accept the concept of a fetus as a person, but I believe the focus should be on those people who already walk this earth. I get impatient, even angry, with all the breath and brainpower used to defend "the unborn" when even a fraction of that energy, properly spent, could alleviate enormous amounts of very real suffering among those who are neglected and despairing.

Once again, you have written a powerful post and one that knocks my socks off....and I sincerely thank you for that.

My original intent was only to convey that women who disagree with abortion are not necessarily religious.

You talk about neglect of children in the inner cities. FWIW, I audited local health departments in my state and I read the files of young women coming into the health departments, getting every birth control method they wanted and they chose not to take/use it. Let's wonder why these children are being conceived in the first place.

As to whether I've been bought into the patriarchal male power structure, I don't know and I really don't care....I'm happy being me, whereever the influences came from....
