Re: a more interesting question is a dual chipset for P4, or should I say the lack of it

Given the memory bandwidth that even a single P4 needs to avoid having prefetch cripple its performance, it may be never. But if they ever manage to get Colusa out the door, it should support Dual CPUs.

System controller
Profusion PIII, FSB 100, AGP, OctCPU, SDRAM, PCI-66
Greendale mobile, RDRAM
Placer ??
Plumas Gallatin, DualCPU, InfiniBand
Plumas LE Gallatin
Brookdale Willamette, SD/DDR
Tulloch Prescott
82850e (Tehama-E) Willamette
82850 (Tehama) Willamette, AGP, FSB400, RDRAM PC800
82860 (Colusa) Foster, DualCPU, FSB400, RDRAM PC800, 8GB max
82870 Xeon/Itanium, AGP, max. 2GB RAM, OctCPU, RDRAM or SDRAM/DDR 266

Joe,

Which chipsets are supposed to support P4 or Foster in dual configuration?

Serverworks, for one.

There seems to be a distinct possibility that AMD will beat Intel with the release of SMP chipset.

It takes an OEM to sign up to develop around a CPU chip and a chipset. I don't think even the OEMs that use Athlons in PCs are looking at any server possibilities from AMD, at least the big ones anyway.

Last Sept. Intel was claiming a dual Foster (supported by Colusa) for the forth quarter of last year. Maybe they are having as many problems as AMD.
