Exactly, more or less.

Part of what bland was really objecting to was the alarmist mendacity of the writer of the article.

Bland is not opposed to helping others. He does object to being transparently manipulated into it by means of guilt or fear.

Why on earth should we help other people, no matter where they live? Because we can imagine what it could be like to be someone else, and there but for chance, or luck, or the grace of God (if you believe in one) go you.

I agree with the idea of helping other people but repeating Bland's question why should we be obligated to? There is a difference between charity and having money taken from you without your consent.
