Time to market and waiting for the cheapest time hardly match, El. When you make a lot you also make mistakes. Where would Cisco be today without acquisitions? Cisco would not exist, period! And you know that. Sure enough Ericsson and Siemens can count their cash and be happy that they did not move places by not spending money on good or bad acquisitions. In the EWSD area Siemens legacy is their asset but right now they are struggling badly. Never seem to get the new projects done, typically spend 1-2 years on them and kills them when the software status makes them miss the window. A big positive surprise: Siemens did great in GSM phones last year!

Cerent has been a huge win for Cisco. They are selling like hotcakes and have just announced some new products that already are selling like hotcakes. I will keep my eye out for revenue numbers coming out of the Cerent acquisition, but they are already on track to get $7 billion in revenues from Cerent within 2-3 years of its acquisition. Not a bad a payback period at all, given that Cerent will likely bring Cisco many many billions over the $7 billion mark throughout it's lifetime.
