That was my take. Enlightened self interest should dictate that we would want to take on such tasks to minimize world suffering. Our first duty is to our own people. But in terms of effect, $1 spent here on birth control does a fraction of the good $1 spent in SSA would do.

The suffering of overpopulation in Africa will come back to haunt us. Weak, starving people won't rise up against us directly. AIDs compromised people whose immune systems are weak will act as Petri dishes, teaching viruses and bacteria how to effectively defeat the human immune system. Passengers of international flights will carry this disease from Africa to points around the globe. The hopelessness of poverty also breed extremists where the promise of a good afterlife is all some people have. That makes them willing stooges for all sorts of mischief.

Unless you have plans for quarantining of the entire continent, it is certainly something that should be on our radar screens for the GLOBAL agenda. Right now, we have conditions in our own country that aren't unlike the poverty in the Third World.

It's not like the people who don't want US intervening in Africa want to do the intervention HERE. They simply want to ignore the whole problem world wide. I think AIDs is a risk to those who will never get it because of the nature of the disease. If you wanted to teach organisms how to kill people, AIDs puts people in the right shape for the lessons.
